Wintereinbruch!

Klar, Handschuhe, Wollmuetzen, Daunenjacken, was sonst.
Ich habe naemlich Folgendes in Arvos und meiner neuen Lieblingslektuere' Xenophobes Guide To The Germans', dass wir bei Jona entdeckt haben, entnommen: 'Small talk is an expression which has no direct equivalent in German. People would be mortified at the suggestion that any utterance they make is less than portentous. The English compulsion for discussing the weather is looked on with wry compassion. Instead the Germans are delighted to discuss the enormous strain and pressure of their work, hardships, stress symptoms, doomsday and other uplifting topics. ...'

Slum Visit

Ecumenical Sangam is not only working in the villages south of Nagpur but also in 8 slums. So today, Mr. Bruce Sir (who will unfortunately leave us tomorrow), Arvo and I visited a sewing and tailoring class that is held in a slum community hall (a room, provided by Sangam with window grills to secure the sewing machines and equippment) . The slums themselves differ, the one we went to is a legal slum and therefore people started to built their houses of concrete and bricks instead of plastic sheets and corrugated iron. My first and of course subjective impression was that the atmosphere in the slum was different from the villages'. On our way to the community hall we passed some badly drunk and not so friendly looking folks, children here were dirtier and streets were lined with rubbish and other stuff. Around ten girls attended the 6-month course which is a great means of empowerment for them. After finishing the class they can earn their own money by sewing clothes and therefore stand on their own feet. Our visit naturally caused a lot of curiosity among the slum dwellers, especially the kids, so after a while the community hall was turned into a playground. Fortunately, Bruce and Arvo are perfect bouncers and so we got rid of the nags soon. (Pics: the slum sewing class, sewing class teacher Mamta Walde showing her latest work, slum kids, accomodation and Arvo on his way to the community hall)

Vote for Banana!

Arrived! And we finally got a sleeping berth on the train. Viva la Korruption!

We saw some interesting election appeals and had an inspiring view from our hotel window!

Now only Angelina can tourn the day around...
To kill time until our train to Nagpur departs I bought a ticket for the new film with Angelina Jolie. This day will definitively be on my top ten list of worst India days. I already felt a little bit ill yesterday but it went worse. Today I felt feverish, had headache and shivering. We had to leave our hotel room far too early this morning, so since then I am walking through Hyderabad like a Zombie, a white zombie with red eyes. Which is on the other hand good because not so many indians dare to harass me. Because Arvo and me had some different plans today we will meet at the railway station at 10pm. The start here was also quite adventurous, we arrived at 5 am in the morning, the first rikshaw driver drove us to the wrong end of town, the 2nd driver knew the area of our hotel, so after a sporty march with our backpacks we finally found our destination. unfortunately they mixed up my room reservation and first it seemed they are booked out, but then a deluxe double room turned up which we took, too tired to discuss any more. Apart from all these little hurdles, Hyderabad is an interesting city, my favourite was the basar area around Charminar. We also went to Golconda Fort, a huge quite impressive ruin, unfortunalety overgrown by weed. I will add some pictures once i am back!

Chaotic start...

...in Hyderabad. I will write what happend once we are back in our safe, clean, friendly, beautiful home Rainbow in Nagpur:) After the 3rd interesting but also exhausting day in the capital of Andrah Pradesh I am currently enjoying the quietness of the internet cafe. We will now check out the Hyderabad nightlife scene ( we read about 2 or 3 nice bars...)

18.11.2007 Bollywood Experience

Just came back from our first Bollywood experience. And I have to admit I had several goose flesh. 100% kitsch, a beautiful actress and nice dance moves! The cinema was huge, completely booked out and therefore very crowded. 8 oversized fans provided a gentle chilly breeze (foreshadowing, I brought a huge dupatta to wrap myself in). The racket started with the national anthem. Everybody stood up. While singing, the Indian flag was shown on the movie screen. After an astonishing punctual start, scenes with most popular actors (e.g. Khan) were accompanied with enthusiastic shouts, screams, applause.
After one hour there was a short brake. Now I have to criticize one indian custom:
Why didnt they adopt the straight accurate queueing from the English? My attempt to buy popcorn was quite unsuccesful until Meenaksi pushed me to the front of the bulk of greedy jostling Indians, stepping on my feet. I definitively have to get used to it, otherwise it will probably cost me a lot of nerves in the following months in India.
Because the Rainbow guesthouse is booked out next days (our work was too good I assume;) we have to clear our rooms and therefore decided to go to Hyderabad instead of going to Bamhani. Our train leaves tomorrow at 4pm (hopefully it is delayed, otherwise we will reach Hyderabad around 5 or 6 am in the morning) we will be back on the 24th november, with some nice jewelery from the famous arabian bazar...

Kein Indienaufenthalt ohne Bollywood Kino! Hilfe!

Anna & Arvo Travels

Arvo and me spent most of our free time to plan our trips for the next weekends. If you need any advise, contact us, we almost know the indian trainschedule by heart now....

1. Exploring Hyderabad - The city in Andhra Pradesh is known for its rich history, culture and architecture representing its unique character as a meeting point for North and South India, and its multilingual culture, both geographically and culturally.

2. Khajuraho Temples

A UNESCO world heritage site in central India, Khajuraho is known for its sculptured temples dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, and Jain patriarchs. Khajuraho was one of the capitals of the Chandela kings, who from the 9th to the 11th century CE developed a large realm, which at its height included almost all of what is now Madhya Pradesh state. Of the 85 original temples—most constructed of hard river sandstone—about 20 are still reasonably well preserved. Both internally and externally the temples are richly carved with excellent sculptures that are frequently sensual and, at times, sexually explicit.

Ashtanga Yoga in Mysore

Worshipping Lakshmi

10.11.2007
Yesterday was day 3 of the diwali festival. Whole Nagpur was preparing for this important day – colourful chalk designs were created in front of each house, flower girlandes, candles, oil lamps and kitsch lightchains were put up… all streets were cleaned and people greeted us shouting ‘Happy Diwali’. Here are some impressions from the city. In the evening we were invited to the house of Jonas uncle, Dr. Mukahshedee. This was indian upper class deluxe. Our driver Hargovind was the barkeeper of the night, mixing some nice Cuba Libre (90% Rum, 10% Cola, I couldn’t drink it) Jona told us that some millionaires’ neighbours wifes next door celebrated this night smoking and gambling, in the past often with nice American cars.
The fireworks were incredible, ging on for 2 hours (I think those we saw last night are not allowed in Europe any more) At 12 pm it seemed like being in a street war, so many firecracker…. Wow

Gandhis Ashram

8.11.2007

Yesterday we had a Get Together in Bamhani, before the staff goes on diwali holidays. Short show acts were prepared by the kindergarten children, sewing class girls and technical class boys. My favourite was the spontaneous performance of this young man. Nice moves;) Besides the show there was a Rangoli drawing competition (who draw the nicest chalk powder ornament design) and journey to Jerusalem game. After that we (Arvo, Jona - CEO from Germany - and two guests from Goettingen) went to Gandhis Ahsram in Sevagram, appr. 2 hrs. south Nagpur, in the middle of nowhere. Here he lived and worked from 1936. It was an interesting place as you could go into the hut he lived in (Bapu Kuti), his office (his telephone still there), kitchen, his wifes hut (Ba Kuti) etc. People who want to built their lives on basis of the eleven vows of the ashram can work and live in the area as Sadhaks. I spotted some, wearing the simple white handmade clothes.

My Day on Floor 2 1/2

Today I spent 2 1/2 hours on floor 2 1/2 - in the elevator. Stupid powercuts!

Jetzt mal wieder was zum Dazulernen.

Ab Freitag wird in Indien das Diwali Festival gefeiert. Und wir sind dabei. Juppi!

On friday, we will celebrate the diwali festival...
Diwali, (in Hindi - दिवाली or दीपावली), is a major Indian festival that is very significant in Hinduism and Jainism. Celebrated by approximately 1 billion Hindus and Jains and known as the "Festival of Lights," and lamps (called diyas or kandils) are lit as a sign of celebration and hope for humankind. The lights also represent the time when Rama came back from the forest, and the people of Ayodhya (the capital of his kingdom) lit lamps to welcome him back home. Celebrations focus on lights and lamps, particularly traditional dīpa or deeya (earthen lamp, as illustrated). Fireworks are associated with the festival.

Caught in the act

I was too curious and had a look at Banksys picture. Damn, it was more exciting not to know how he looks like. If you also want to be annoyed with yourself check:

apropos caught in the act... i love this video (i think only the germans will know and remeber it as one of the most hilarious videos ever)

For the first time

since we arrived, it was raining.
But not just a short shower as I expected but for hours... Feeling a little little bit homesick today the rain gave me an aquainted feeling. I enjoyed it very much.
Hitvada published two press releases, one about us the other about the leprosy symposium.
